Freedom of Speech & Living Together

The American ideal of freedom of speech and the press is rooted in values of justice and equity. Governing authorities that try to censor, intimidate, manipulate, or “cancel” free speech are forces of tyranny, exclusion, and disenfranchisement.

We are proud to have been part of the Addison Independent’s “Living Together” series. The perspectives offered by the Addison County neighbors who wrote for the series spoke up for the marginalized and challenged the status quo. Some folks did not like reading some of those perspectives. So the Independent printed their response. And so the conversation continued. As it should be in a community that values ‘freedom and unity.’

It took courage for the Addison Independent to publish the series. It took courage for the writers to express their views of the truth surrounding the challenge of homelessness, the suffering of the marginalized, and the harm it creates in our community of communities. Green Mountain Justice is grateful to the New England Newspaper & Press Association for valuing justice and equity and recognizing our work of co-liberation with this honor.

Stay tuned for a new collaboration between Green Mountain Justice, fresh voices from our community of communities, and the Addison Independent starting soon.
