Veto Threatens Shelter: This is Not Who We Are

In less than three weeks, Vermont will kick over 700 of our unhoused neighbors—adults and children—out of motel shelter. They will be forced to go live out in the woods, under the underpasses of our roads, and in the vehicles. All because Governor Scott vetoed the legislature’s proposed Budget Adjustment Act (BAA).
The General Assistance Emergency Housing Program’s motel shelter program is far from ideal. Homelessness is a complex challenge. Vermont needs a clear, resourced, implementable strategy to end chronic homelessness. But from the comfort of sitting behind our screens, we cannot imagine the pain and suffering Vermont is getting ready to unleash on our most vulnerable neighbors. Call (802-828-3333) or email Governor Scott. Tell him that you care about all your neighbors, and not to punish the unhoused over a budget disagreement with the legislature. Tell him this is not who we are.
